Team Edo has returned from the 3rd National Para Games in Abuja to a hero’s welcome, following an impressive third-place finish that has drawn commendation from the Edo State Sports Commission.

In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Edoko Wilson Edoko, the Commission’s Executive Chairman, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, praised the para-athletes for their resilience and discipline, describing their performance as a strong statement despite competing with one of the smallest contingents at the tournament.

At a reception held on Thursday in their honour, Enabulele said the athletes had done the state proud and assured them of better support going forward.

“On behalf of the Commission, I welcome you back and commend your efforts. Securing third place with a relatively small team is a significant achievement,” he said. “We will expand participation in future competitions and improve welfare and recognition for all para-athletes.”

He also noted the team’s exemplary conduct throughout the competition, highlighting the absence of disciplinary issues, and urged them to maintain the same focus ahead of the upcoming National Sports Festival scheduled for later this year in Enugu.

As part of immediate recognition, Enabulele announced a cash reward of ₦50,000 for each gold medalist.

Representing the Chairman, the Executive Director for Edo North, Hon. Frank Ilaboya, endorsed the reward initiative and made an additional personal donation to support the athletes.

The Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. A.P. Efe Amenze, who led the team to Abuja, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the podium finish reflected the athletes’ determination despite limited numbers.

Team Edo finished the competition with 25 gold, 14 silver, and 12 bronze medals, bringing their total to 51.

Enugu State topped the medal table with 40 gold medals, alongside eight silver and seven bronze, while Bayelsa State placed second with a total haul of 89 medals, including 25 gold.

Rivers, Lagos, Abia, Plateau, Osun, Adamawa, and Kwara states rounded out the top ten standings.

The Edo State Sports Commission reiterated its commitment to strengthening para-sports development and maintaining the state’s competitive edge in national sporting events.
