Team Nigeria claims more medals at Africa Weightlifting Championship

At the Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship in Egypt, Team Nigeria won two more medals in the competition as Edidiong Umoafia claimed two silver medals.

The 2022 Commonwealth bronze medalist, Umoafia, lifted 144kg in snatch and 170kg in clean and jerk with a total of 314.

A statement from the Media Officer of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Amaechi Agbo, stated that Umoafia competed in the 73kg men’s category to claim the two silver medals.

“Umoafia’s win automatically takes Nigeria’s medal haul at the championship to eight,” Agbo said. “Rafiatu Lawal and Adijat Olarinoye had earlier the same day won three gold and three silver medals respectively.”

Nigerian weightlifters, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal and Adijat Adenike Olarinoye also won medals at the 2024 Africa senior weightlifting championship in Egypt, claiming six medals combined.

Competing in the 59kg women’s category, Lawal and Adijat dominated the category as they catered away the top prizes in Day 1 of the championship which also serves as Paris 2024 Olympics qualifier

Agbo also said that Team Nigeria is expected to win more medals at the championship on Wednesday when Joy Eze Ogbonne competes in the 71kg women’s category by 11 a.m. Nigeria time.

The Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship also serves as Paris 2024 Olympics qualifiers. Team Nigeria weightlifters are also expected to participate in the final qualifying campaign, scheduled to hold from March 31st – 11th April 2024 in Phuket, Thailand.
