President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Google’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in Nigeria following a high-level meeting with the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, in Paris on Wednesday.
The meeting was shared with journalists in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Joined by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, President Tinubu discussed a strategic partnership with the Google team aimed at establishing Nigeria as a leading technology and innovation hub in Africa.
The collaboration aims to leverage AI, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure to drive economic growth and boost Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
Ongoing discussions focus on key initiatives, including expanding Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, equipping the workforce with vital digital skills, fostering AI-driven research and innovation, encouraging widespread cloud adoption, and positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global digital economy.
President Tinubu emphasized that this partnership aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes economic diversification through industrialization, technology, and innovation.
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy will provide strategic oversight, while the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will coordinate efforts alongside the private sector to ensure widespread and meaningful impact.
Speaking at the meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation, stating: “Nigeria has an incredible opportunity to lead in AI and digital innovation in Africa. Google is excited to continue working with the Nigerian government to create an ecosystem that fosters innovation and economic growth.”
Dr. Bosun Tijani, speaking about the engagement with the President, highlighted that the partnership between Nigeria and Google presents a significant opportunity to accelerate the country’s technological growth and strengthen its digital economy.
He emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring that AI and digital transformation deliver tangible benefits for businesses and citizens across the nation.
