President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday night held a crucial meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) amid threats of nationwide industrial action over unresolved workers’ demands.

The meeting, which took place at the State House, Abuja, comes as tensions rise between organised labour and the Federal Government over issues including workers’ welfare, the rising cost of living, and the implementation of previously agreed concessions.

Confirming the engagement in a statement, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said key stakeholders attended the discussion.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with the leadership of the NLC, alongside the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma; Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo; Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State Labour, Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha,” the statement partly read.

The NLC delegation was led by its national chairman, Comrade Joe Ajaero. “The chairman of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, led the labour leaders to the meeting on Tuesday night at the State House, Abuja,” the statement added.

The development follows the NLC’s warning to embark on mass protests nationwide, citing the Federal Government’s failure to fully address workers’ demands. These include relief measures to mitigate the impact of economic reforms, wage-related concerns, and broader socio-economic hardships.

Organised labour has accused the government of delaying the implementation of agreements reached in previous negotiations, cautioning that inaction could spark industrial unrest and street protests in major cities.

As of filing, both the Federal Government and the NLC had not disclosed the details or outcomes of the discussions.
