President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described his rise to the nation’s highest office as a journey marked by formidable obstacles, attributing his victory to perseverance and divine guidance.
He made the remarks on Friday during the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
Reflecting on the challenges leading up to the 2023 general election, Tinubu recalled a period fraught with severe economic and social pressures that tested Nigerians’ resilience.
“The campaign coincided with food shortages, the currency redesign policy, and widespread fuel scarcity that saw long queues at petrol stations. Many Nigerians struggled to afford a single meal a day. The obstacles were real and significant,” he said.

Despite the difficulties, Tinubu insisted that his emergence as president was divinely ordained. “God brought us here. Without Him, I wouldn’t be here. Governor Buni and Governor Uba Sani knew the obstacles on my path—wildfire, currency redesign chaos, and endless queues at filling stations. People even died from hunger due to cash scarcity, all for one election,” he added.
The President said the trials underscored the importance of gratitude and faith. He urged citizens to remain steadfast, maintain hope, and trust in divine providence.
Tinubu also stressed unity, tolerance, and resilience as essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy. “We must continue to be resolute that this democracy we have taken into our hands must not fail,” he said.
Highlighting the need for accommodation and inclusiveness, the President said leadership requires creating space for others, particularly during difficult times. He urged Nigerians to show compassion to their neighbours, emphasizing that mutual support strengthens society.
Warning against the imposition of will in governance, Tinubu reiterated his conviction that leadership is ultimately determined by God. “God creates the opportunity for individuals, and if God says you will be there, you will be there,” he said.
