Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso refused to give up on the title race following Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Bayern Munich, a result that leaves his team eight points behind the league leaders.
Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Leverkusen couldn’t break through a Bayern side content with the point, knowing it would keep them top with 12 games remaining in the season. It was just the second time since 1992 that Bayern failed to register a shot on goal in a league match.
“We played very well. We did everything we could to win, other than score a goal,” Alonso said after the game.
He expressed surprise at how much Leverkusen had controlled the match, especially against Bayern, who have been dominant this season.
“Honestly, after watching many of Bayern’s games this season, I thought they’d be more dominant, but we were the dominant side today. You can see from the stats how much we were in control. We just lacked some precision.”
Alonso remained hopeful, insisting his team could still close the gap to the top.
“For the table, it wasn’t enough to make a difference, but the season is far from over,” Alonso said. “As I said last year when we were chasing the title, we can talk in April. There are still many points to play for.”
He added, “Without a doubt, we’ll keep fighting in every competition and continue striving for victories.”
Despite the disappointment of the draw, Alonso believed the performance showed Leverkusen could compete with anyone.
“This is something we can build on, not just in the league, but also in the Champions League.”
In Europe, Leverkusen were the only German team to finish in the top eight.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany responded to suggestions that his side didn’t deserve the draw, saying, “Leverkusen earned the right to put us under pressure, but we showed the mentality to block shots, with players like Harry (Kane) and Jamal (Musiala) putting in defensive efforts, who are usually the ones scoring goals for us.”
