Transfer: Chukwueze’s move imminent as Milan send Gabbia to Villarreal

Matteo Gabbia has officially left Milan to join Villarreal on a season-long loan deal, ready to continue his career in Spain.

The 23-year-old Italian centre back was part of the Rossoneri’s squad in their pre-season tour in the United States and left this week to complete his move to the Spanish side.

A product of Milan’s youth system, Gabbia struggled for regular playing time under Stefano Pioli last season, seeing just 895 minutes of action across 17 total appearances.

As announced, Gabbia has now officially joined Villarreal on a season-long loan deal from Milan, which is understood not to contain a permanence clause.

The announcement of the Italian defender’s transfer also suggests that the move of Samuel Chukwueze is imminent, with Milan ready to pay Villarreal around €28m total for the Nigerian winger.

Gabbia has made 51 appearances for the Milan first team and was part of the squad that won the Scudetto in the 2021-22 season.
