Manchester United are trying to sign Switzerland goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, on a free transfer next summer, ESPN reports.
Sommer will leave Borussia Monchengladbach when his contract with the German club expires at the end of the season.
United want to add the 33-year-old to Erik ten Hag’s squad and can begin negotiations from January 1.
Ten Hag is looking to refresh his goalkeeping department ahead of next season.
Martin Dubravka, who was signed on loan in the last summer window, is expected to return to Newcastle United having made only one first-team appearance at Old Trafford.
The club’s interest in Sommer, who was part of the Swiss squad that reached the last 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, will raise doubts about David De Gea’s long-term future.
De Gea has been the first choice under Ten Hag, but the Red Devils are yet to open talks over a new contract.
The Spaniard’s deal runs until the end of the season and the club has the option to extend it until 2024.
De Gea’s limitations as a ball-playing goalkeeper saw him left out of Spain’s squad by coach Luis Enrique for the World Cup.
