The Nation’s U-17 side competing in the ongoing U-17 Afcon in Algeria rose to the occasion Saturday to defeat South Africa 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinal stage.
Prior to the Saturday’s match both teams were tied on three points and needing either a draw or win to advance from the group. The tide appeared to be heading against the Nduka Ugbade tutored side when the South African shot into the lead as early as the sixth minute of the match.
But the Eaglets fought back with Agada levelling up in the 34th minute.
The South Africans again shot into the lead again in the added minutes of the first half. But the hard fighting Eaglets again cancelled out thanks to Eke in the 46th minute before Abdullahi grabbed the winning goal for the Eaglets in the 64th minute.
The remaining minutes of the match became a ding-dong affair and the Eaglets held on to their lead while the South Africans fought tooth and nail with intent to bouncing back again to no avails as the Eaglets cruised into the quarterfinals.
