UCL: Simeone expects fireworks from Madrid, Atletico duel in Bernabeu

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone acknowledged that city rivals Real Madrid boast a more decorated history, but he remains confident in his team’s ability to deliver ahead of their highly anticipated Champions League last-16 derby today.

Los Blancos, the record 15-time Champions League winners and current holders, welcome Simeone’s Atletico to the Santiago Bernabeu for the first leg. Madrid have eliminated Atletico in their last five encounters in the competition, including victories in the 2014 and 2016 finals, as well as the 2017 semi-finals, 2015 quarter-finals, and their first meeting in the 1959 semis.

While Atletico have never won the Champions League, finishing as runners-up on three occasions, Madrid are widely regarded as the ‘kings of Europe,’ with Catalan rivals Barcelona claiming the trophy five times.

Simeone, however, was undeterred by the historical imbalance, emphasizing his team’s growth. “I always place Barcelona and Real Madrid where they are because of their history, so nothing has changed,” Simeone said in a press conference. “Both clubs have a tremendous legacy, while we are focused on growth, which is a beautiful thing.”

The Argentine coach is eager for his team to make their own mark at the Bernabeu. “As we often reference history, and history is significant, Real Madrid’s record in the Champions League is extraordinary. Tomorrow, we have a big opportunity,” he continued.

Atletico are currently in a tight La Liga title race with Madrid’s rivals, Barcelona, sitting second—just one point behind the Catalans and two ahead of Madrid. However, Simeone does not believe the domestic competition will have any influence on their European encounter.

“This will be a game full of respect against a great opponent, and I believe they respect us in the same way,” said Simeone. “All the previous meetings won’t affect this match. This is the Champions League.”

Looking ahead to the derby, he added: “If we were facing a team outside of our league, we wouldn’t focus on history like this. For the city of Madrid, having Atletico and Real Madrid face each other is truly spectacular.”
