Ajax legend Marco van Basten has claimed that Manchester United are paying far too much money to bring winger Antony to Old Trafford.
Antony is closing in on a move to United after the Red Devils agreed an £84million (€100m) with Ajax over the weekend, and he was spotted at Carrington as he arrived for his medical on Monday.
Should the deal go through, Antony would become United’s second most-expensive signing in their history behind Paul Pogba. Van Basten seems to think Ajax are getting the better side of the transfer.
‘Antony worth €100m? No, by far no,’ Van Basten told Ziggo Sport on Monday night.
The Brazilian winger has scored 24 goals and registered 22 assists in 82 appearances for Ajax since joining the club in 2020
During this time he has won the Dutch title twice, plus the Dutch Cup while playing under Erik ten Hag, and he is now set for a reunion with his former boss at United.
However, Van Basten has still questioned the 22-year-old’s consistency, and he feels Antony needs to work on his end product.
‘Antony hasn’t proven much yet. Of course he played a few good games. But his efficiency has not been high in the last two years,’ he added.
Van Basten has appeared to have reservations about Antony ever since he arrived in the Netherlands from Sao Paulo two years ago for around £21m (€25m).
The former AC Milan forward expressed his frustration to Fox Sports back in 2020 at Ajax spending so much money on Antony rather than promoting youth from their academy.
