The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria flagged off their campaign in the WAFU B U-17 championship with a 4-2 victory over Ghana at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday.
Emmanuel Michael opened the floodgate for the Nduka Ugbade tutored side in the 12th minute. The early goal served as a ginger for the Nigerian side as Precious Williams, Jubril Azeez and Light Ike followed his footsteps. The hosts however have Abdul Razak Salifu and Collins Agyemang to thank for grabbing two consolation goals. An elated Ugbade was full of praise for his boys noting that their determination shone like a million stars in the encounter.
The Eaglets’ next group game is against Togo on Tuesday, 14 June, with a draw enough to take them through to the semi-finals.
Lined up Sunday in Group A are Côte d’Ivoire versus Benin Republic and Burkina Faso against Niger Republic.
The two teams that make it to the final of the WAFU B tournament will qualify for the 2023 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria, while the top four teams at the U-17 AFCON tournament will qualify for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru.
