Why I invited Arsenal defender Saliba, says France coach Deschamps

France coach, Didier Deschamps has explained his call-up for Arsenal defender William Saliba.

Currently on-loan with Olympique Marseille, Saliba has been called into the France squad this week as a replacement for Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard.

Deschamps said: “We have been following him for a while, he is with the U21s. I talk a lot with Sylvain Ripoll, he was also aware since the weekend. I could have announced his call-up yesterday, but I waited until the end of his match with OM to make it official.

“He knows the system of play. He has a good heading game and exudes a lot of serenity and tranquility, even if there are sometimes a few small excesses in certain situations of recovery with the ball.”
