World Cup 2022: Lionel Messi sets another record

Date:

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has set another record in the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup following his side’s 2-1 victory over Australia in the round of 16 on Saturday evening.

Recall that Messi recently broke late Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s World Cup appearances record for La Albiceleste.

Messi has now moved onto the podium in World Cup history for matches played, second only to Germany legends Lothar Matthäus and Miroslav Klose.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward played his 23rd match at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan on Saturday against Australia.

The former Barcelona captain is on course to move into first place in the all-time table.

Messi drew level with Italy legend Paolo Maldini and moved within one of Klose, whom he will catch in Argentina’s quarter-final against the Netherlands on Friday, and two behind Matthaus.
