World Cup: Australia Beats Denmark, Progresses To Knockout Stages

Date:

The Socceroos of Australia have progressed to the knock out stages of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after claiming a 1-0 victory against Denmark, courtesy of a goal from Mathew Leckie, at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar.

Australia only needed a draw to progress from Group D providing Tunisia did not beat France, while Denmark had to win to have any chance of progressing. Denmark dominated the first half but couldn’t find the net. Australia held on as the scores remained 0-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Australia were determined to hold onto the draw but were rewarded after a fine piece of play. In the 60th minute, right-winger Leckie found himself in Denmark’s box after a good piece of skill and fired past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to give Australia a 1-0 lead.

The goal moved Australia back into second place while Denmark were rooted to the bottom, with Tunisia already leading France in the other fixture 1-0.

Denmark tried to find a way back into the match, but their inability to score left Australia in the drivers seat in Group D as the referee blew the final whistle.

The match finished 1-0 in favour of Australia, who finished second behind France in the group with six (6) points from 3 games. Denmark finished with one (1) point to cap off a disappointing outing in Qatar.
