WWC: NFF hands off FIFA’s $60k bonus payment to Super Falcons

Date:

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has announced that the federation will no longer honour its previous agreement to pay Super Falcons players’ match bonuses.

This decision comes in light of FIFA’s new policy, where players will receive a guaranteed sum of $60,000 for reaching the Round of 16 at the ongoing Women’s World Cup tournament – the amount will increase as the team progresses further.

Gusau stated that FIFA has chosen to directly pay the players from the appearance fees due the Federation.

“We don’t have any issues with the players,” the NFF chief told Lagos-based Brila FM.

“In the first instance we agreed with the players that we would give them match bonuses, and when we receive our appearance fees we will give them 30 percent of it.

“Later on, FIFA came up with a new model of payment. They decided to take part of the money that is due to the Federations and pay Players directly.”

“So, we sat with the players based on the new development – even before they left our shores for Australia – and explained to them that the old arrangement was now invalid.

“It’s to the players advantage now and all parties agreed.

“Some of the concerns raised about bonuses are what was owed the players as far back as two years ago.

“We will settle this outstanding fee the moment we get our money from FIFA.”
