2023 WWC: Nigeria’s Super Falcons beat Australia to top Group B

Super Falcons were truly in their best on Thursday when they thrashed the hosts Australia 3-2 in the keenly contested group B duel in the on-going FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Thanks to the enterprising finish of Barcelona star, Azizat Oshoala, never-say-die scoring magic of Ohale Osinachi and ever-ready Uchenna Kanu. They fought the Australians like wounded Lioness and rose from a goal down to steal the show.

Australia’s Emily van Egmond had catapulted the hosts up in the 47th minutes of the game after displacing Nigeria’s defence to score the morale-boosting goal but their celebration was short-lived with a grounding equaliser from Super Falcons dare-devil scorer when she found the net in the 51st minute of the game.

The first ended with both sides confidently returning to their dressing rooms with fresh hope and desire to win the maximum points at stake.

The second half started on a cautious note but Nigerian girls were more determined to avenge the past loses to the Australians when Osinachi suddenly increased the tally for Nigeria in the 65th minute to return smiles into the faces of the teeming fans at the stadium.

Seventh minutes later, Barcelona lady, Oshoala displayed a classical move to score the third goal that finally destroyed the hope of the hosts. With this victory, Super Falcons are back in contention and on a smooth journey to the knockout stages of the tournament.
