Senegal earned their first victory in Group L of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with a 1-0 win over Burundi at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi.
After a frustrating opening draw at home against Burkina Faso, where they conceded a late equalizer, Senegal bounced back with a penalty goal from Ismaila Sarr in the second half. The win puts them back on track after a challenging start.

Burundi’s defense proved tough to break down in the first half, with goalkeeper Matteo Nkurunziza making several key saves. Senegal, led by Sadio Mane and Nicolas Jackson, struggled to find their rhythm but eventually intensified their attack.
A penalty in the 71st minute, converted by Sarr, secured the win for Senegal. The team’s defense held strong to prevent any further threats from Burundi, ensuring a crucial three points.
Next month, Senegal and Burundi will continue their Group L campaigns with double-headers against Burkina Faso and Malawi, respectively.
