The Super Eagles have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a dominant 4–0 victory over Mozambique in their Round of 16 encounter in Fès.

Nigeria began on the front foot, extending the momentum from a flawless group stage campaign that saw them win all three matches to finish top of Group C. Mozambique, appearing in the Round of 16 for the first time after qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams from Group F, struggled to match the Eagles’ intensity, pace and attacking quality.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Ademola Lookman finished clinically from an Akor Adams assist. Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead five minutes later, before the striker struck again shortly after the restart, latching onto another Lookman delivery in the 47th minute. Adams sealed the emphatic win in the 75th minute with Nigeria’s fourth goal.

Wilfred Ndidi anchored the midfield alongside Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, while Stanley Nwabali returned between the posts. The defensive quartet of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Bruno Onyemaechi ensured Mozambique posed little threat throughout the contest.

Head coach José Peseiro refreshed his side in the second half, introducing Paul Onuachu and Samuel Chukwueze for Adams and Lookman, while Tom Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika replaced Onyeka and Ndidi. Moses Simon later came on for Osimhen as Nigeria managed the game with ease.

By the 80th minute, the Super Eagles had recorded eight shots on target, with Mozambique failing to register a single effort that troubled Nwabali.

The victory sends Nigeria into the quarter-finals in commanding fashion as they continue their pursuit of a fourth AFCON title. The Super Eagles will next face the winners of the clash between Algeria and DR Congo.
