The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has invited Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, to appear before a panel of investigators on Monday in Abuja over a petition he filed against a former petroleum regulator.
Dangote had petitioned the commission against Ahmed Farouk, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
A source close to the commission, who confirmed the development on Sunday, said the ICPC has constituted a panel of seasoned investigators to handle the probe.
According to the source, the ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Aliyu (SAN), directed the panel to give focused attention to the allegations raised in Dangote’s petition.
The oil magnate is expected to appear in person or be represented by his lawyer, Ogwu Onoja (SAN), with relevant evidence when the investigation formally begins.
In the petition, Dangote accused Farouk of corruption and misappropriation of funds, alleging that he spent millions of dollars on the education of his four children at exclusive schools in Switzerland.
He also alleged that Farouk undermined domestic refining by colluding with international traders and oil importers through the continued issuance of petroleum import licences.

The ICPC has asked Dangote to submit all supporting evidence to aid the investigation, assuring that the process will be conducted fairly and transparently.
Although Farouk has since resigned his appointment, the commission said his exit does not affect the ongoing investigation.
The petition further alleged that Farouk expended more than $7 million on his children’s education abroad without evidence of lawful income.
Dangote is demanding Farouk’s arrest, investigation and prosecution, accusing him of living above his means while serving as a public official.
The ICPC’s spokesperson, John Okor Odey, confirmed that the commission received the petition on December 16, submitted by Dangote through his legal representative, against the former NMDPRA chief.
