Pop star Davido has again matched his football passion with cash ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, staking $25,000 (about ₦36 million) on Nigeria’s opening Group C clash against Tanzania.

The singer shared a screenshot of his betting slip on his X handle on Sunday, showing he backed both teams to score, with a projected payout of $96,564 (approximately ₦140 million).

This is not the first time the Afrobeats star has publicly backed the Super Eagles with a sizeable wager. Before Nigeria’s last competitive match against Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Davido staked $10,000 (₦15 million) on a Nigerian win with both teams to score, targeting a possible payout of $50,194.58 (₦75.2 million).

Nigeria, however, lost that encounter, but the setback has not dampened Davido’s enthusiasm for supporting the national team.

The Super Eagles will take on the Taifa Stars of Tanzania at the Complex Sportif de Fes, Morocco, on Tuesday, December 23, as they begin their campaign for a fourth AFCON title.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, head into the fixture as favourites, having finished runners-up at the last edition of the tournament.

Still, expectations around the current Super Eagles squad remain guarded. Their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has tempered optimism, leaving even loyal supporters cautious.

On paper, however, the statistics favour Nigeria. The Super Eagles are ranked 38th in the world, while Tanzania sit 112th on the FIFA rankings.

Tanzania have also never beaten Nigeria in a competitive match, a record that further boosts confidence in the Eagles’ chances.

With fans and high-profile supporters such as Davido backing the team, attention will turn to Fez on Tuesday as Nigeria look to open their AFCON 2025 campaign with a convincing statement.
