Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is under intense scrutiny ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Manchester City, with reports suggesting his position could be at risk if the team fails to deliver a strong performance.

Marca reported that the warning follows a turbulent weekend at the Santiago Bernabéu, where club president Florentino Pérez and senior directors convened a late-night crisis meeting after Madrid’s 2–0 loss to Celta Vigo. The defeat leaves the team four points behind Barcelona, a sharp decline from a five-point lead held just over a month ago.

Sources indicate that the board is concerned about the squad’s recent poor form, a mounting injury list, and what the club views as unfavourable refereeing decisions in La Liga. However, the primary tension centers on Alonso’s relationship with key players, with some selection decisions reportedly unsettling the dressing room.

“Wednesday’s match against Manchester City is being seen as a decisive test for Xabi Alonso’s future,” Marca reported, noting that senior officials expect a clear on-pitch reaction.

The report adds that potential replacements have already been considered internally. Zinedine Zidane is viewed as the leading candidate should Alonso be replaced, while Jürgen Klopp is seen as a more complex option due to his current sabbatical.

The club has yet to comment publicly on Alonso’s job security, but the upcoming Champions League fixture is expected to heavily influence both the team’s season trajectory and possible managerial decisions this summer.
