House of Representatives member, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, on Saturday received hundreds of members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

The development is seen as a major boost for the APC in the state and a show of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration ahead of future elections.

Political observers say the defection strengthens the ruling party’s base in Kano and improves the re-election prospects of both the President and the Governor.

Doguwa, who represents Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency, led an inclusive APC registration exercise, welcoming prominent NNPP defectors, including the Kano State Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, alongside other government officials.

The lawmaker and the defectors completed their APC electronic membership registration and held a rally, during which Doguwa unveiled the Tinubu–Yusuf second-term campaign.

Addressing party supporters, Doguwa said the defectors were committed to advancing the interests of the APC at both the federal and state levels. He said the move aligned with the party’s constitution and democratic principles, describing it as a “win-win” for all members.

He explained that the exercise was part of a broad-based APC registration drive in Doguwa Local Government Area, which attracted key figures from the NNPP, including former party leaders and serving officials under Governor Yusuf’s administration.

Among those who defected, he said, were the Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, a former APC state chairman; Engr. Ado Ibrahim Doguwa; and the Chairman of Doguwa Local Government, Abdul Rashid Doguwa, along with members of the council’s executive and legislative arms.

The defection follows Governor Yusuf’s recent decision to join the APC after a meeting with President Tinubu, which reportedly resolved outstanding political issues, including his governorship ticket.

Following the development, former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, reaffirmed support for Governor Yusuf, urging other aspirants to step aside. While the APC has welcomed the Governor’s defection, NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has criticised the move, describing it as a betrayal.
