Arsenal win appeal over controversial Lewis-Skelly red card

Date:

Arsenal have successfully appealed the red card handed to Myles Lewis-Skelly during Saturday’s 1-0 victory at Wolves, meaning the 18-year-old will avoid a three-match ban.

The left-back was sent off in the first half at Molineux for tripping Matt Doherty as Wolves countered following an Arsenal corner.

Referee Michael Oliver did not review the incident via VAR, a decision that frustrated Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Former England captain Alan Shearer was one of a number of outspoken critics of the call, describing it as “one of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time”.

The Football Association issued a statement confirming that an independent regulatory commission has upheld the claim of wrongful dismissal for Myles Lewis-Skelly and has rescinded his three-match suspension.

Lewis-Skelly, who has impressed in his first season with Arsenal’s senior team, is now available to play against Manchester City and Leicester in the Premier League, as well as the second leg of Arsenal’s League Cup semi-final against Newcastle.

Despite playing with 10 men for nearly half an hour before Wolves’ Joao Gomes was also sent off, Arsenal secured a late victory with a goal from Riccardo Calafiori, keeping them six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
