AWCON: South Africa claim first leg Victory over Algeria

Like their Nigerian counterparts, Banyana Banyana of South Africa claimed a 2-0 victory in the two legged qualifier over Algeria on Friday.

The same Margin Super Falcons handed their Ivorian counterparts at the MKO Abiola stadium.

Hildah Magaia scored the first goal for South Africa with a set-piece in the 40th minute of a game as Kholisa Biyana’s corner gave Magaia slot a stunning header, which was out of reach of goalkeeper Chloe N’Gazi.

With a 1-0 advantage at half-time, South Africa continued to dominate and kept N’Gazi busy.

Coach Desiree Ellis’ side clinched their first-leg qualifying win as star striker Thembi Kgatlana ended the game in style with a neat finish in the 90th minute.

Banyana will take a 2-0 advantage as they travel to North Africa for the second leg on Wednesday at the Stade Omar Hamadi in Algiers. Super Falcons on their part will jet out Sunday for the return leg billed for the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan on Wednesday, 23rd February.
