Barcelona set £58m asking price for Frenkie de Jong

Spanish giants Barcelona have placed an asking price tag of £58m on midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong, who joined Barcelona from Ajax for £64m in 2019, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford following news of Erik ten Hag’s appointment. The price tag indicates about £8m deduction in his cost price and is no doubt a huge boost for United in their bid to sign the Dutchman this Summer.

The 24-year-old played under the Dutch manager during his time at Ajax, where ten Hag developed the midfielder and helped him attract Barca’s interest among other elite clubs, following a string of excellent performances during the 2018-2018 season. 19.

Catalan giants boss Xavi is said to be a big fan of the midfielder, but the cash-strapped Spaniards need to balance the books and de Jong could be one of the players up for sale.

The report also claims that De Jong is seen as a valuable player, but that Xavi is not convinced he has the leadership to carry this new generation of Barcelona players forward.

Barcelona are also said to have agreed a £16m deal for Valencia ace Carlos Soler, but they need to clear some space in the squad to complete the transfer.

De Jong has been a regular in the Barcelona squad this season, making 42 appearances in all competitions, tallying four goals and five assists. United had last year offered £47 and may have to improve on their offer if the Reds are serious about having their man in the Old Trafford.
