Breaking: court reinstates Shaibu as Edo deputy governor, nullifies Impeachment

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ruled to reinstate Mr. Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State. Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment, declaring Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void.

The court found that the impeachment violated both sections 188 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended. In addition to restoring Shaibu to his office, the court ordered that he should receive all salaries, allowances, and benefits from April 8, the date of his illegal impeachment, until the end of his tenure.

Furthermore, the court issued a perpetual injunction preventing Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Edo State House of Assembly from obstructing Shaibu in carrying out his duties as Deputy Governor. It also directed the Inspector General of Police to promptly restore all security details to Shaibu.

The court criticized the reasons given by the Edo Assembly for impeaching Shaibu, describing them as weak and suggestive of a politically motivated vendetta.
