Nigeria gold medalist in the ongoing Common wealth games Chioma Onyekwere has stated that African athletes will make their presence known in the field events
The 28-year-old African champion won with a season’s-best throw of 61.70 metres, beating England’s Jade Lally who won Silver while Nigerian Obiageri Amaechi took bronze.
Onyekwere is only the second African woman to win Commonwealth discus gold after South Africa’s Elizna Naude in Melbourne in 2006.
She told SportsDay in a brief chat that,” i am so happy winning a medal here today. not just only me check the records so far we africans are doing grate in the tournament and i must say it is a good thing for us.
“We hope to rise more than this because we want the world to feel our presence here in Brimingham especially my country Nigeria, i hope we will win more medals to register our presence in the games.
“I’m expecting more for the future. We have World Athletics Championships next year, we have All-African Games. So I think Africa is going to do a really big step for the next couple of Worlds coming up.”
