Bukayo Saka shared insights about his Nigerian Heritage, meaning of his Yoruba name

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has opened up about his Nigerian heritage in a recent BBC interview.

Born in England to Nigerian parents, the 22-year-old football star emphasized the importance of his Nigerian roots and shared the meaning behind his Yoruba name.

Having grown up with dual nationality, Saka has consistently embraced both his English upbringing and Nigerian culture, a sentiment he has maintained since his days at Arsenal’s Hale End academy.

During an appearance on BBC Five’s Football Daily Show, Saka spoke fondly about his connection to Nigeria, expressing, “It holds a special place in my heart.

Growing up with Nigerian parents in this country, both sides mean a lot to me.”

When asked about the significance of his Yoruba name, Saka proudly explained, “It translates to ‘added joy’.”

Reflecting on his name, he added, “I really cherish it. I believe my grandma gave it to me, though I should confirm with my parents to be certain.”
