CAF WCL Qualifiers: Delta Queens Beat Athletico, Reaches Final

Delta Queens of Nigeria reached the final of the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers for WAFU B zone, after defeating Athletico FC of Cote D’Ivoire 3-2 in the semi-final, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.

The two West African clubs sought to grab the single slot to represent the zone in the next stage of the continental competition.

Athletico took the lead five minutes into the match when Melissa Behinan scored for the Ivorians. Delta Queens looked for a way back into the match, but the scores remained 1-0 by halftime.

In the second half, Delta Queens substitute Mercy Omokwo equalised from in the 62nd minute. However, the match ended in stalemate, forcing the match into an extra time.

Delta Queens’ Omokwo then scored another after she superbly beat the Athletico’s defence to make the scores 2-1. The Nigerian ladies turned the game around in spectacular fashion.

Delta Queens captain Taiwo Afolabi extended the lead for the Nigerians to it 3-1 to dim the hopes of the Ivorians.

However, Joy Sunday, reduced the tally to 3-2 when she pulled back a goal five minutes to the end of the game to score a consolation for the Abidjan side, as the match finished.
