Former Enugu State Governor, Barr. Sullivan Chime, has endorsed last weekend’s adoption of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by South-East governors, as well as leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the region, saying the President has performed creditably.

Chime said he was part of the endorsement process from the outset and expressed confidence that Tinubu and the APC would record a sweeping victory in the South-East in the 2027 general election.

He spoke on Tuesday in Udi during the flag-off of the APC electronic membership registration exercise in Enugu West Senatorial District, insisting that dissenting voices in the region would eventually align with prevailing political realities.

“I am part of the South-East, so you can take it for granted that I was part of that endorsement. That decision is ours and we stand by it. It is achievable,” he said.

According to the former governor, President Tinubu has performed well despite prevailing global and regional economic challenges.

“The President has done well. What is happening in Nigeria is not isolated; it is global and across Africa. Given the circumstances, he is doing well,” Chime stated.

He said he would speak more extensively on the 2027 election as the political season approaches.

“Elections are coming up next year. He will do well. When the time for campaigns comes, we will talk,” he added.

Chime also expressed satisfaction with the growing acceptance of the APC in the South-East, particularly in Enugu State, noting that his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the 2015 election had been vindicated.

He said APC leaders in Enugu State were determined to exceed the two-million membership target set for the state in the ongoing e-registration exercise by Governor Peter Mbah, who he described as the party’s leader in the state.

“We are here first to thank our people. You can see the excitement to join the APC. APC is now the only viable party in Enugu State,” he said.

“Ten years ago, when I joined the APC, we saw tomorrow. We knew the PDP was declining. Today, it is clear that APC is the party to beat. The two-million target is just a starting point. We will surpass it in Enugu State.”

He added that growing public enthusiasm showed that the APC had firmly re-established itself in the state.

“It is exciting to see people happy to be part of the APC. Those who are still skeptical will come around. APC remains the way forward,” he said.

Also speaking, Chairman of Udi Local Government Area, Hon. Hyginus Agu; Chairman of Aninri LGA, Prince Ugochukwu Nwanjoku; Chairman of Awgu LGA, Hon. Uchenna Okoko; Chairman of Ezeagu LGA, Dr. Vita Ndu; and Chairman of Oji River LGA, Hon. Greg Anyaegbudike, pledged to mobilise massively at the grassroots to exceed the two-million membership target.

Agu said Governor Mbah’s performance had earned him widespread support across the state.

“Our governor has done remarkably well. There are projects in every ward to point to. The people are happy. As far as they are concerned, Governor Mbah represents their political direction. He has chosen the APC, and the people stand firmly with him and President Tinubu,” he said.

At the weekend, Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu, Hope Uzodimma of Imo and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, alongside other APC leaders and stakeholders from the South-East, adopted President Tinubu as their sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
