Chioma Onyekwere Sets New African record in Discus Throw!

Date:

Reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Chioma Onyekwere is the new African record holder in the women’s Discus Throw!.

The 28 year old who made history as the first Nigerian to win the Commonwealth Games Discus throw gold medal threw a distance of 64.96m at the Oklahoma Throws Series to break the 64.87m record set by South Africa’s Elizna Naudé in March 2007.

The mark also sends Onyekwere to August’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Onyekwere, the reigning African champion in the event first showed signs she could become the second African to hit the 64m mark when she threw 63.30m two years ago in California.

She has now become the fourth Nigerian woman to hold an African field event record after Vivian Chukwuemeka (Shot Put), Ese Brume (Long Jump) and Annette Nneka Echikunwoke (who has changed allegiance to the USA) in the Hammer Throw
