Commonwealth Games: 2022 is God’s year, says golden girl Amusan

Date:

After setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the final of the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan has said that she would continue to showcase her talent at the big stage, adding she was yet to come to terms with her stunning 12.12 seconds semi-final win at the World Championships before going on to win the world title in Oregon with 12.06s wind-aided time.

Yesterday, Amusan added a Commonwealth Games record to her world record as she stormed the race in a time of 12:30 while Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas took Silver ahead of England’s Cindy Sember with the Bronze.

“2022 is God’s year, Tobiloba is just showcasing her thing,” an excited 25-year-old Amusan said. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around the world record but I’m used to the world champion title but the record is still not sinking in yet.

“Honestly, it’s been good. The journey, I can’t just wrap my head around it. I’m thankful to my coach, my sponsors and then my family. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here. I’m just thankful I have the right people in my corner, supporting and cautioning me through the ups and downs and this win is for them all,” she noted.

She described her feat in Birmingham as poorly executed. “When I say a poorly executed race, I know when I execute smoothly but I think my first 500 wasn’t it. I was able to get myself together and do what I needed to do.”

“Anything is possible. The goal is to come here and execute. Coming into the race, I wasn’t expecting 12.30 but I’m just grateful,” she added. “I’m dedicating it to all my supporters, family and my coach.”
