Commonwealth Games: Adekuoroye, Oborududu set games record with gold medals

Odunayo Adekuoroye and Blessing Oborududu set Commonwealth Games records after winning their third consecutive gold medals in their third appearances in Birmingham.

At the wrestling event which took place at the Coventry Arena, it was Adekuoroye who won the first gold after she showed her class against India’s Anshu Malik with a 7-3 victory by points (VPO1) in the Women’s Freestyle 57 kg.

To seal her place in the final, she defeated Uganda 2-0 in the round of 16 and beat Kenya’s Sophia Ayieta 10-0 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, she humbled Canada’s Hannah Taylor 10-0.

Also, yesterday, Oborududu confirmed her superiority in the women’s freestyle 68kg after defeating Canada’s Linda Morais 5-1 through victory by points.

Esther Kolawale added a bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 62kg after beating Scotland’s Abbie Fountain 10-0.

With Adekuoroye and Oborududu’s triumph in Birmingham, they have become the first two wrestlers in the history of the games to win third consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games having won gold in 2014 and 2018 in Glasgow and Gold Coast while the Birmingham gold added to their retinue of medals at the games.
