Commonwealth Games: Powerlifting adds to Nigeria’s medal haul

Powerlifting event has improved Nigeria’s haul with one gold, two silver and one bronze medals at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Ikechukwu Obichukwu won Nigeria’s last medal late Thursday with a silver in the men’s heavyweight.

Despite leading throughout the event, Obichukwu surrendered the lead to the eventual gold medalist India’s Sudhir who set a games record of 134.5kg.

Obichukwu, who settled for the silver medal lifted an overall 133.6kg while Scotland’s Micky Yule 130.9kg to pick the bronze medal.

Innocent Nnamdi won the first medal for Nigeria in the powerlifting event with a bronze medal in the men’s lightweight.

Nnamdi, who competed alongside his compatriot Thomas Kure, lifted 132.5kg overall to make the first podium for the powerlifting team.

Kure however, finished fourth overall to miss out from the podium.

Alice Oluwafemiayo set a new world record in the women’s heavyweight after lifting an overall 123.4kg to claim the gold ahead of her compatriot Bose Omolayo who lifted 115.2kg to pick silver while the bronze medal was won by Hani Watson of Australia after lifting 98.5kg.
