Eguavoen Confident in Eagles’ Ability to Overcome Rwanda

Date:

Interim coach Austin Eguavoen has reaffirmed the Super Eagles’ determination to secure a win against Rwanda in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier today at Amahoro Stadium, Kigali. Eguavoen emphasized the team’s readiness and quality, stating they are well-prepared to handle whatever challenges the Amavubi may present.

Rwanda started their qualification campaign with a 1-1 draw against Libya in Tripoli last Wednesday, with Innocent Nshuti scoring an equalizer after Libya’s Sobi Al Dawi had given the hosts an early lead.

In contrast, Nigeria opened their campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic on Saturday, thanks to a brace from Ademola Lookman and a goal from Victor Osimhen. Eguavoen, speaking with NFFTV in Kigali, expressed confidence in the squad’s flexibility and quality.

“We have quality players who can adapt to different styles of play and formations,” Eguavoen said. “Whatever system Rwanda uses, we are prepared to counter it effectively.”

The coach also acknowledged the high expectations from Nigerian fans and assured that the team respects their opponents but will focus on securing the three points.

“Football has evolved, and we respect every team we play against. However, we must be prepared as every team will raise their game against Nigeria,” Eguavoen added.

Team captain William Troost-Ekong echoed the coach’s sentiments, emphasizing the team’s focus on achieving their objective. “We are here with a purpose, and with Coach Eguavoen’s guidance, we are united in our goal to win and top the table,” he said.

Today’s match at the 45,000-capacity Amahoro Stadium marks the second fixture in Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign. The two teams are set to meet four times over the next 12 months, including in the World Cup qualifiers.

Rwanda’s head coach Torsten Spittler, who has led the Amavubi to mixed results recently, will rely on his defense and midfield to challenge Nigeria’s formidable attack. The Nigerian squad, staying at the Radisson Blu in Kigali, is fully fit and ready, with Eguavoen confirming that all 23 players are prepared for the clash.
