Egypt secured a morale-boosting 2–1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly played in Cairo on Tuesday, with Mostafa Mohamed’s second-half goal proving decisive in the final pre-Africa Cup of Nations test for both sides.

The hosts took the lead in the 29th minute when Mahmoud Saber tapped home at the far post after a precise delivery from Zizo, who consistently troubled the Super Eagles down the right flank with his pace and movement.

Nigeria struggled to settle offensively but came close to an equaliser when Paul Onuachu’s long delivery almost resulted in an own goal, forcing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy into a quick reflex save to deny Yasser Ibrahim’s inadvertent header.

The Super Eagles, however, drew level moments later. Zaidu Sanusi’s free kick from the left was spilled by El Shenawy at his near post, allowing Chidozie Awaziem to react fastest and nod the loose ball home from close range.

Egypt regained control after the interval and restored their lead through Mostafa Mohamed, who finished confidently from inside the box after another well-worked attacking move involving Zizo.

Nigeria failed to muster a late response as the Pharaohs managed the closing stages efficiently to round off their preparations on a positive note ahead of the tournament.

Egypt begin their Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday, while Nigeria face Tanzania a day later.
