Former Aston Villa captain, Gabriel Agbonlahor, has told Chelsea to spend their money on signing a new Didier Drogba rather than Everton’s Anthony Gordon.
Gordon has been linked with a move to join Chelsea for £60 million.
The 21-year-old wants to move to Chelsea after just one full season in the Everton first team.
However, Everton does not want to sell Gordon, but the player’s desire and Chelsea’s offer may be too hard for Frank Lampard’s side to say no.
But Agbonlahor has now questioned why such a big fee is being spent on a wide player, adding that the Blues should go for a No 9 in the mould of the club’s former players Drogba or Diego Costa.
He told talkSPORT: “[The Gordon deal] just doesn’t make sense. Everyone’s shocked, you look at social media and you usually get a feel for it. £60m is quite a lot, I have watched him quite a lot.
“He’s a young lad, he’s played for the under-21s, he’s going to keep improving. It just seems very strange from Chelsea.
“Surely that £60m could go out, I don’t know what strikers are available, but go out and get that top No 9 that they need. Aubameyang’s a good player, but he wasn’t at his best form at Arsenal, Barcelona are going to let him go.
“They need a Diego Costa, a Drogba, Chelsea. I feel like that’s what they’re missing. I look at Sterling and Havertz, they need someone to play off.”
