Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “dead” following the court order stopping the party from holding its planned national convention.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Fayose said the latest development underscores the deepening crisis within the party, noting that many of its prominent members have since deserted it.

“I said to you about a year ago that the PDP is in trouble and if we don’t have a solution on time, the party will be dead, and the party is dead now,” he said.

“I have said it repeatedly on this programme and I’ve been able to tell Nigerians, the challenges confronted by a party whose big heads jump out of the water. That clearly shows you the challenge of the PDP, and who is going to save Jerusalem, when the people who are supposed to save Jerusalem have jumped out of the water,” he added.

Fayose’s remarks came hours after the Federal High Court in Abuja restrained the PDP from proceeding with its national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In a ruling on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu granted an interim order stopping the convention, pending the determination of a suit filed by a former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido.

The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring or recognising any outcome of the proposed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention.

Justice Lifu ruled that allowing the exercise to go ahead could cause “greater harm,” noting that former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido had argued he would be denied the chance to contest for the national chairmanship if the convention proceeded.

Lamido had approached the court seeking to halt the process, insisting that the party was acting in breach of its own constitution.

The decision further deepens the leadership crisis rocking the opposition party, which has struggled with defections and internal wrangling since the 2023 general elections.

Fayose, reacting to the ruling, said only urgent reconciliation and genuine commitment from senior figures could save the PDP from total collapse, warning that further delay would render the party increasingly irrelevant.
