Inter Miami and Argentina captain Lionel Messi has hinted he could feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but said his participation would depend entirely on his physical condition and ability to contribute meaningfully to the team.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano’s post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Messi said: “I’m excited for the World Cup. But I don’t want to be a burden. I want to feel good physically, be sure that I can help and contribute things to the group. I will see day to day if I really feel good physically to be like I would like to be able to participate.”

Messi, who will turn 39 during the 2026 tournament, famously led Argentina to glory at Qatar 2022 — securing the one major honour that had long eluded him.

Since that triumph, speculation has persisted over whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will extend his international career to defend the title in North America.

Despite his move to Major League Soccer in 2023, the Argentine star has continued to feature in World Cup qualifiers, maintaining impressive form for La Albiceleste.

For now, Messi says his focus remains on staying fit and performing at a level worthy of both his own standards and Argentina’s ambitions. His decision, he added, will come “only if I can help the team as I should.”
