The Federal Government has congratulated the Super Eagles for their victory over Egypt in the third-place match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, describing the team’s performance as a source of national pride.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised the Eagles for clinching the bronze medal and for their resilience throughout the tournament.
“Your performance at this tournament was a source of pride and joy for our nation. You upheld Nigeria’s rich football tradition with heart, skill and resilience,” Idris said. “From the group stages to the final whistle in Casablanca, you displayed courage, unity and belief in one another.”
He said the team’s campaign went beyond results, noting that the players inspired millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.

“You did not just play; you inspired a nation. Winning the bronze medal further strengthens Nigeria’s impressive AFCON legacy and reflects the Super Eagles’ consistency at the continental level,” the minister added.
Idris also commended the technical crew, support staff and players for their commitment and sacrifice, stressing that their effort reaffirmed Nigeria’s status as a force in African football.
“To our coaches, support staff and every player who wore the green and white jersey, thank you for your dedication. You faced challenges with determination and gave your best on every pitch,” he said.
Although the title slipped away, Idris noted that the bronze medal was earned with honour and collective effort.
“This medal belongs not only to the team but to every Nigerian who believed, cheered and stood by the Super Eagles throughout the competition,” he said, urging the players to build on the achievement ahead of future tournaments.
Nigeria secured the bronze medal after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in a tense third-place playoff at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca. The match ended goalless after regulation time before goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged the hero, saving spot-kicks from Mohamed Salah and Oumar Marmoush to seal the Eagles’ ninth third-place finish in AFCON history and maintain their flawless record in the playoff fixture.
