The Federal Government has opened applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, offering Nigerian postgraduate students the opportunity to pursue studies in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Malaysia.
The announcement was confirmed on Monday via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.
According to information published on the PTDF scholarship portal, the scheme is open to MSc and PhD candidates in oil and gas–related disciplines and covers tuition, return air tickets, accommodation, living allowances, health insurance and bench fees where applicable.
PTDF said the 2026 overseas scholarships are designed to provide access to world-class training, cutting-edge research facilities and global expertise, while strengthening indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

For PhD applicants in the United Kingdom, the fund explained that awards will operate on a split-site arrangement, with research conducted between the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), and selected partner universities, including Robert Gordon University, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Portsmouth.
The agency stressed that the scholarship is highly competitive, noting that selection will be based on academic excellence, research proposals, professional membership and the relevance of the proposed programme to the oil and gas sector.
Eligibility criteria for MSc applicants include a minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in a first degree or Second Class Upper (2.1), completion of the National Youth Service Corps programme, computer literacy and at least five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics. PhD applicants are also required to submit a research proposal of not more than five pages detailing objectives, methodology and data collection plans.
PTDF warned that applicants must ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified before applying, adding that multiple applications or submission of falsified documents will lead to automatic disqualification.
Interested candidates are to apply online via scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng for approved programmes at PTDF partner institutions. The deadline for applications is February 27.
