Finidi Quits Super Eagles Coaching Position

Date:

Finidi George has officially resigned his position as head coach of the Nigeria national team, Super Eagles.

The relationship between Finidi and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) hit the rock when the soccer authorities disclosed plans to hire a foreign technical adviser for the team, after their shambolic 1-2 defeat suffered in the hands of Benin Republic.

The matter even got worsened when Finidi was singled out for blame during a recent meeting with the Sports Minister, John Owan Enoh in Abuja.

Finidi will go down in history as one of the shortest coach to have handled the Super Eagles.

The Eagles are currently 5th in a six- team group C involving South Africa, Rwanda, Benin, Zimbabwe and Lesotho which Nigeria were originally seen as favourites.

Only one team will qualify automatically from the group for the 2026 FIFA world cup mundial to be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.

The Eagles have made it to every world cup tournament since after making their first appearance in ’94 except in 2006, and 2022 which they failed to qualify.

Nigerians are waiting for the announcement of the new foreign expatriate who will oversee the team’s remaining world cup qualifying campaign and the preparations for the 2025 Africa cup of nations (AFCON) as promised by the NFF.

The former Enyimba int’l of Aba coach was presented by the NFF with the option to step down as assistant to the yet to be engaged foreign coach, but he chose the honourable path of resigning himself.
