The 5th edition of the Jagaban Cup 2026 commenced with great enthusiasm at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere on Thursday morning.
The opening match featured the defending champions SGFC Athletics facing off against 36 Lion, who triumphed with a score of 3-1. Uche Emeribe netted the first goal of the tournament in the 15th minute, followed by a second goal from Azuka Alatan in the 26th minute. SGFC Athletics managed to score one through Okwuosa Chukwudi, but Lion secured their victory with a late goal from Michael Hunsa.
In the second match, Ikorodu City FC narrowly defeated Smart City FC 3-2. Farouk Salami opened the scoring for the Oga Boys, who dominated the first half. Smart City made a comeback in the second half, but Ikorodu City maintained their lead to clinch the win.
Klassisc FC achieved a 1-0 victory over FC Bethel, courtesy of a penalty converted by Charles Obani in the 25th minute.

Capping off the day, the final match was an exhilarating seven-goal encounter between Mavlon and Broad City, with Broad City emerging victorious at 5-2.
Meanwhile, tournament coordinator Wale Joseph praised the level of play displayed by the teams on the first day.

“The quality of football was outstanding, and we are delighted to witness so many young players giving their best. Our scouts are present, and we are eager to see who they will be monitoring closely as the tournament unfolds,” mused the veteran journalist and administrator.
“We are focused on the quality of football, and we have observed some impressive performances thus far. Our aim is to nurture young talent, and this tournament plays a crucial role in that initiative. We are looking forward to the upcoming days – it promises to be thrilling,” he added.
