Hosts Ivory Coast knockout holders Senegal on penalties

The submission that football is like buiscuit you don’t know from where it will break came to the fore last night and into the early hours of today as host Ivory Coast knocked out defending champions Senegal.

The battle of Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro kept many sports lovers and betters alike awake as they vowed to see to the end of it.

Ivory Coast extended their perfect record against Senegal at the Afcon finals to three wins as they reached the quarter-finals in dramatic fashion.

The encounter had ended 1-1 at regulation time and extra time resulting in penalty shootout to which the Ivorians eventually won 4-5.

Franck Kessie, who had scored from the spot four minutes from the end of normal time, converted the winning penalty to seal an extraordinary victory for the hosts, who redeemed themselves after a humiliating group-stage display which culminated in two defeats.

Senegal had made a dream start when Habib Diallo struck in the fourth minute from a Sadio Mane cross.The defending Champions had an increadible run in the group stage with a photofinish that saw them garner maximum nine points from three matches. Their dream to extend their victory in the Naitons Cup to two thus hit the rocks last night. At the last edition they got the better of Egypt to win their very first title of the Nations Cup.

Survivors Elephants will now wait to see who they face on Saturday from the match between Mali and Burkina Faso on Tuesday (today)
