Former Netherlands and Manchester City goalkeeper, Ronald Waterreus, has slammed Barcelona over Frenkie De Jong’s future at Camp Nou.
Waterreus branded Barcelona as a commercial monstrosity, adding that the LaLiga giants are blackmailing De Jong amid the ongoing summer transfer window.
De Jong has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and Chelsea this summer.
However, it is largely believed that the 25-year-old prefers to stay at Barcelona.
Barcelona owes De Jong €17million in deferred wages, which is proving to be a big hurdle for the midfielder to sort out his future beyond this summer.
The Blaugrana have even asked De Jong to almost cut his salary in half if he wants to stay at the club.
Despite their fragile economic situation, Barcelona have signed Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, Raphinha, and Andreas Christensen this summer and Waterreus has now hit at the Spanish club, claiming Xavi’s side makes modern football so ugly.
“I can no longer hear the slogan ‘Més Que Un Club’ (more than a club). Barcelona is a commercial monstrosity, in my eyes it symbolizes everything that makes modern football so ugly,” Waterreus told Algemeen Dagblad.
“The way they’re now blackmailing Frenkie is a striking example of this. I hope he keeps his balance and stays unless they harass him more and wreck his own chances heading into the World Cup. So he better go to United…”
