Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Thursday officially commissioned the newly-built Victor Omololu Olunloyo Tourism Park in Ibadan.
Represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, the governor said the leisure park, located on Airport Road, Alakia, would serve as both a recreational facility and a hub for preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Governor Makinde noted that the park’s facilities and cultural artifacts would allow residents and visitors to explore the unique features of Oyo State and its geo-political zones.
He explained that the park, developed from a previously abandoned site, was intended to immortalise the late former governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, whom he described as a brilliant and outstanding leader.
“We are thankful for the commissioning of this park. Baba Olunloyo was a unique personality from childhood, becoming a commissioner in his 20s and excelling in every endeavour. Today, we celebrate his achievements and contributions to the state and the nation,” Makinde said.
The governor recalled earlier projects undertaken in Olunloyo’s honour, including the commissioning of a three-kilometre dual carriageway linking the town with the airport, attended by the late statesman.
“This site was once filled with shanties, but the government transformed it into a space that honours a respected leader. The park is unique, featuring artifacts representing Oyo’s culture — from Ibarapa and Oke Ogun to Ogbomosho and Ibadan. It reminds us to value and preserve our traditions,” he added.

Makinde urged users of the park to maintain its facilities and use them appropriately, highlighting its proximity to the international airport and the influx of investors and foreign visitors.
“Let them enjoy the ambience and serenity of our state,” he said.
Earlier, Commissioner for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Hon. Abulmojeed Mogbonjubola, described the park as a milestone in Governor Makinde’s vision to redefine Ibadan’s skyline and enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal.
He noted that the project would serve as a centre for leisure, history, and culture, reflecting the government’s commitment to urban and physical development.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi; Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni; commissioners; the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade; co-chairman of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, Chief Wole Oyelese; former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero; and other traditional, political, and religious leaders.
