With less than two days to the commencement of the 2026 World Cup tournament, the majority of the Nigerian team, the Super Eagles, are already rueing missing out of the biggest football tournament ever.

In an exclusive interview with Sportsville aired on Channels on Sunday, the Media Manager of the team, Promise Efoghe, spoke of how most of the players are feeling bad not being in the World Cup.

The Super Eagles are currently perfecting plans to take on Portugal tomorrow in another international friendly in Lisbon, but the dominant discussion in the camp is the World Cup and missing out of the tournament in USA, Canada and Mexico.

According to Efoghe, who spoke to Sportsville via Zoom, “most of the players are sad about this development. “Players like Wilfred Ndidi, Terem Moffi, Paul Onuachu, amongst others, are not finding it funny that Super Eagles will be watching the biggest football tournament as spectators “.

Painful as it is to the players and the fans back home, the Eagles have shifted their focus on the next Africa Cup of Nations, promising to make amends.

“Focus is now the next AFCON as the players have resolved to make Nigerians smile again,” Efoghe continued.

“They are gradually putting the pains of the World Cup miss off their minds and keying in to the philosophy of coach Eric Chelle, who I must say, is doing a great job.

“You could see that a new team akin to what we saw in USA ‘94 squad is gradually evolving and in no distant future, the team will make Nigerians proud again,” Efoghe added.

The Eagles have secured 17 wins and recorded just 3 loses since missing out of the World Cup under the Malian coach, and Efoghe believes that it’s a sure sign of the resurgence of a new Eagles.

Nigeria will lock-horns against Portugal at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon at 8:45 pm Nigerian time on Wednesday 10th June.
