Nigeria vs Ghana: Ighalo slams those against his return to Super Eagles

Date:

Al Hilal striker Odion Ighalo has hit back at fans who are against his recall to the Super Eagles.

The striker was recalled to the national team after he announced his retirement following Nigeria’s defeat to Algeria in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

He reversed his retirement In November 2021 and featured in a 2022 World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde that same month.

But there are suggestions in some quarters that the 32-year-old is blocking the chances of younger players by not sticking to his decision to call it quits.

Speaking with ESPN, the former Manchester United and Watford striker said, “I don’t pay attention to that. Everything they’re saying is their own cup of tea. At my age, I just signed for a new team. This is my 11th team in my professional career.

“I have been called up, I will take my bag and I will go to represent my country and give my best on 100%.

“As long as I come out from every game and I’m satisfied with my performance — whether it is a win, loss, or draw — then that’s it. I’m a professional footballer.

“This is what I’ve been doing for 17-18 years so why would I be worried about what people say?”

The former China-based striker has scored 18 goals so far this season in 25 appearances.

Nigeria football authorities released the squad to face Ghana in the World Cup qualifying playoff later this month.

The Super Eagles will tackle Ghana away in the first leg before returning home to face their West African neighbours in the second leg in Abuja.
