Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has assured residents of maximum security and restated its commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure throughout the electoral process.
Commandant General of the Corps, Prof. Ahmed Audi, gave the assurance in a statement issued on Friday by the NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi.
Represented by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Operations, Philip Ayuba, Prof. Audi said officers deployed for election duties have been fully briefed to act with professionalism, neutrality, and respect for human rights.
“Our presence at the polling stations is to protect, not to interfere. We are there to create an atmosphere where voters feel safe, confident, and free to exercise their civic rights,” Audi stated.
He explained that the corps’ role goes beyond maintaining law and order, noting that the protection of critical installations—such as electricity, water supply, communication facilities, and other public utilities—is essential for the success and credibility of the election.

“Our mandate compels us to safeguard the assets that keep the nation running, because the credibility of any election depends not just on the safety of voters, but also on the protection of the systems that sustain it,” the CG added.
Audi reaffirmed that the NSCDC remains committed to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and public infrastructure while promoting peace and stability during national assignments.
According to the statement, the NSCDC boss urged officers to maintain vigilance around Independent National Electoral Commission facilities, government buildings, and other key locations, warning that any form of misconduct or political involvement would attract strict disciplinary measures.
He also revealed that the corps would continue to collaborate closely with the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, and other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security ICCES to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process.
The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Audi, has urged voters in Anambra State to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security personnel during Saturday’s governorship election.
He assured residents that their safety and the protection of vital national assets remain top priorities for the Corps.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday began distributing election materials to the 21 local government areas of the state.
The materials were dispatched from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in Awka.
The poll is seen as a major test of Nigeria’s democratic process and INEC’s ability to conduct free, fair, and credible elections.
According to official figures, about 2.7 million registered voters with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are expected to cast their ballots across 5,718 polling units.
Sixteen political parties are participating in the governorship race, with two female candidates among those contesting.
